Home Safety and Free Smoke Detectors

We offer free smoke detectors and home safety inspections to all Collingswood residents. Contact the office for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Fire Prevention and Education

The Collingswood Fire Department offers and performs fire prevention and education to all public, parochial and private schools in the district and all residents and merchants.

  • In classroom instruction
  • Public Assemblies
  • Commercial and residential evacuation and training
  • Tours of the fire station
  • Fire engine and ambulance demonstrations

Fire Code and Property Maintenance Enforcement

Fire and property maintenance physical inspections are performed every 24 months with a registration of the property every 12 months. Life Hazard Uses are performed and registered every 12 months and some properties are required to have inspections quarterly.

The following enforcement codes are used during the inspection and can be viewed at the Collingswood Public Library.

  •  NJ Uniform Fire Code
  • 1993 BOCA Property Maintenance Code

Inspections are performed in all non-owner occupied and commercial properties. It is the owner of the properties responsibility to register any property that is available for rent.

If there is a change in tenants in between property registrations please update the tenant information on the proper form.

Inspection Scheduling

Inspections are performed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the following time blocks:

  • AM Slot = Between 9:00 am and 11:30 pm
  • PM Slot = Between 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm

We unfortunately cannot schedule the inspection for a specific time, as the inspectors must be available to respond to emergency calls for service. We make every attempt to perform the inspections at the beginning of the time slots, but cannot give you a specific time or estimate of our arrival. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and will make every attempt to arrive at your property as early as possible.

If more time is needed to complete outstanding violations, a time extension form must be completed (found on "Downloads" page) and submitted to the bureau for review.

 

Annual Registration Fees:

                       Property Maintenance:

  • $60 per unit from 1-7 units
  • $55 per unit from 8-25 units
  • $50 late fee if not paid by the due date            

     

           Re-Inspection Fees:

  • 1st re- inspection -  No Charge
  • 2nd $45 per unit
  • 3rd $60 per unit
  • 4th+ $80 per unit

Non-Life Hazard Use Fire Registration Fees:

  • $75 per property 1-15 units
  • $120 per property 16-30 units
  • $190 per property 30+ units

Life Hazard Use inspections are billed by the NJ State Community Affairs Department

Sale of Property Inspections

The Pennsauken-Collingswood Fire Prevention Bureau performs all applicable inspections for the sale of a property. There are two inspections that are performed:

  • Certificate of Occupancy: $50 Fee

o   Inspection of all walkways, sidewalks, curbs and driveways for proper surfacing, damage and tripping hazards

  • Certificate of Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Compliance (CSDCMAC):

o   Fees: $50 scheduled 10+ days before

o   $85 scheduled 4-10 days before

o   $140 scheduled less than 4 days before

o   $50 if a re-inspection is required

  • Requirements for CSDCMAC

o   Smoke detector on every level and every potential bedroom

o   Carbon monoxide detector on every level that has a bedroom within 10’ of the bedrooms

o   ABC Fire Extinguisher mounted in the kitchen

Sale or Property inspections are scheduled on Wednesday afternoons between 1:30pm and 3:30pm

Permits:

 

 

Permits are required for all use of:

  • Torches (roofing, painting etc..)
  • Food vendors for events (Mayfair, Book Fair etc…)
  • Commercial cooking establishments

The permit fee is $42 and an application can be obtained on the “Downloads” page.

 

 

All fees must be paid in money order or check made payable to “Borough of Collingswood”

To obtain copies of any records or view files an Open Public Records Act form must be completed and submitted. This form can be found on the “Downloads” page.
